Systems that connect, carefully

I lead healthcare interoperability work at Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust: Mirth Connect, HL7 and API bridges that keep clinical systems talking without sacrificing control or auditability. Current Trust-side work includes DCR v2 development and data transfers.

I have designed and operated server-side APIs since 2010. My newest live product work is Apilot: a portal for Amazon Buy Box and seller-change monitoring, plus the production APIs (Azone, Ebone, Walone and Apilot.net) that back Apilot's Amazon seller and marketplace data services used by that portal, with live OpenAPI docs and still running 24/7. I design and run production API servers that people and systems depend on.

Alongside NHS integration I am actively building Go microservice architectures, and I use Docker regularly in day-to-day delivery.

Freelance and contract work has covered logistics, express courier and air cargo platforms, Ingram and Gardners catalogue pipelines, and ecommerce integrations with Shopify, Amazon and eBay APIs.

Career work spans hospital automation, therapy practice systems, production accounting software and NHS integration. Currently studying for an MSc in Computing (F66) at the Open University.

  1. Integration Lead

    • Leading healthcare interoperability work across clinical systems, APIs and integration tooling.
    • DCR v2 on the Trust side: development and data transfers, ongoing.
    • Designing and governing message flows, standards alignment and supplier liaison for safe, auditable data exchange.
    • Mentoring engineers and documenting patterns so integrations remain operable after handover.

  2. Lead Developer

    Mar 2024 - Mar 2025

    • Lead Developer on Mirth / Thalamos / Conexes integrations.
    • Built the Thalamos ↔ Conexes Mirth bridge for Digital Mental Health Act workflows: SOAP/XML routing, filtering, logging and controlled responses.
    • Delivered multi-channel Mirth architectures, WSDL services and document-conversion components under change control.
    • Worked with MESH/Spine-facing flows and related clinical integrations; produced KBAs and live handover material.

  3. Freelance / Contract Developer

    Logistics, catalogue and data/API platforms

    Nov 2008 - Mar 2024

    • Server-side API development since 2010: designing and running production API servers that people and systems depend on.
    • Built and still operate the production APIs under Apilot (Azone, Ebone, Walone and Apilot.net) that back Apilot's Amazon seller and marketplace data services used by the portal for Buy Box and seller-change monitoring, with live OpenAPI docs and still running 24/7.
    • Ecommerce and marketplace integrations across Shopify, Amazon and eBay APIs, alongside logistics, express courier and air cargo systems.
    • Express courier platform: original Clipper system (1999-2002); in 2008 migrated to xHarbour, MySQL and Linux servers with no service interruption; then built web modules with PHP and Dojo Toolkit and a client portal integrated into the main system.
    • Ingram and Gardners catalogue pipeline: regular delta-file processing, validation and marketplace export (Laravel, PHP, MySQL, bash scripting, Linux), with millions of images stored in AWS S3.
    • Delivered high-volume data platforms and API products for ecommerce and analytics clients (Python, FastAPI, AWS).

  4. Developer → IT Manager

    Counselling / education institute

    2002 - 2008

    Progressed from developer to IT Manager, owning systems that still support counselling operations.

    • Brought psychological and psychometric tests into the software environment, including 16PF assessments.
    • Built an appointment and practice management system for therapists that remains in use: appointments, payments, invoices, test and assessment results, group therapy, multi-location support and related operational features.
    • Main stack: Delphi + MS SQL. A further version used Delphi + MySQL with TMS components.
    • Budget management, partner integrations, Microsoft ISA, IIS, SQL Servers, ASP and ASP.NET, plus CRM, project and meeting tools; managed outsourced delivery as part of the leadership team.

    • Hospital automation covering inpatient, pharmacy, laboratory, accounting, invoicing and budget management modules.
    • Accounting software spanning stock, current accounts, invoices, statutory accounting, production and production optimisation.
    • Novell NetWare installations; software libraries and applications in Pascal, Clipper and Btrieve indexes.

Internal Mirth path that behaves like the Conexes API for Thalamos Digital Mental Health Act workflows: multi-channel routing, SOAP/XML transform, SSL, error handling and audit logging. Led design and delivery with full system documentation and live handover.

Clinicians gained timely access to the right records; less admin chase and duplication across systems.

Apilot: active product and API ecosystem I built and operate. The apilot.co portal covers Amazon Buy Box and seller-change alerts (ASIN monitoring, email alerts, history). Therapy practice management & psychometrics

2002-2008

Appointment and practice management platform for therapists at a counselling / education institute: appointments, payments, invoices, psychometric results (including 16PF), group therapy and multi-location operations. Built primarily in Delphi with MS SQL; a further version used Delphi, MySQL and TMS components.

Express courier platform modernisation

1999-2018

Logistics and express courier systems spanning Clipper roots (1999-2002) through a zero-downtime 2008 migration to xHarbour, MySQL and Linux servers, then PHP and Dojo Toolkit web modules and a client portal integrated into the main system. Carrier and B2B API work for operational labeling, tracking and related flows.
